Annuity Companies

Annuity companies are not separate entities that exist by themselves in our financial economy. They are actually insurance companies. If you see a company with annuities in their name, you can be sure it is an insurance company.

Annuities and life insurance have some of the same characteristics with the main one being a death benefit. Everybody who buys life insurance understands this fact but not everyone associates a death benefit with annuities.

Regardless of the characteristics, you should compare annuities and the company issuing them before you purchase an annuity. You will want to be sure the company enjoys at least an A.M. Best rating of ‘A’ or higher. You may also wish to look at other rating agencies like Moody’s and Morningstar to see how they rate the company in which you are interested.

You will also want to know in the case of a fixed annuity its credited interest rate and in the case of a variable annuity, the track record of the mutual funds within the annuity. If you are considering an index-annuity, look at the index and interest-calculation formula used to determine your interest rate and amount of money credited to your account.
The underlying concept behind annuities is simple. They accumulate, or grow, dollars that will be used to pay you when you enter your withdrawal phase of the contract. That makes it imperative upon you to know the insurance company issuing your annuity.

Because they guaranteed to pay you, they must generate enough income to meet their obligation. If they don’t, you as the annuity holder will suffer financially. This is not a good spot to be in especially at retirement age.

Fortunately, the Internet gives you instant access to information about any company offering annuities. Do some research on these companies. Educate yourself so you can make the decision that is right for you at this point in your life.
